In the spring of 2011, our family was preparing for a life-changing journey: adoption. With faith at the heart of everything we did, I encouraged my kids to pray about how God would provide for this adoption. Soon after, my 11-year-old daughter Sarah came up with a simple yet brilliant idea—selling chocolate-covered pretzels door to door. I only agreed to support her, secretly hoping that enough people would buy them so we wouldn’t lose money on the endeavor. To my surprise, we quickly sold out. Word spread, and soon, our pretzels were being sold in 32 locations, thanks to volunteers who placed them in their workplaces. It was clear: God was working through this pretzel fundraiser, and we raised enough money to bring home our youngest son, Marcus, in 2012.
After Marcus joined our family, we paused the pretzel-making operation for a few years, thinking our mission was complete. But as time passed, something unexpected happened—people continued asking for our chocolate-covered pretzels. It became clear that our pretzels had created something much bigger than just a one-time fundraiser.
And as a single mom, I found a new purpose to pair with my desire to help women and children in need, especially those affected by child sex trafficking—the fastest-growing crime in America. With more than 100,000 victims and less than 600 beds nationwide for survivors, I knew I had to act.
In honor of Sarah’s original idea, we relaunched the business as Sarah’s Gourmet Pretzels. Our mission: “Pretzels with a Purpose.” Today, we’re more than just a family-owned chocolate company. We’ve built a certified kitchen, expanded into over 100 stores across nine counties, and are committed to making a difference with every sale. For us, Sarah’s Gourmet Pretzels is more than a business—it’s a way to give back, helping survivors of trafficking and mistreatment both locally and globally.
